Some Useful Tips

Here are a couple tips I learned today:
1. Always keep some oatmeal in your kitchen. It is cheep, quick to cook up for some warm breakfast, and is useful in quite a few bakery items.

For instance, in this pie I made up today:

Kami's Caramel Streusel Apple Pie
crust
1 1/4 C flour
1 T sugar
1/2 t salt
1 stick butter, chilled unsalted (cut into 1/2 inch pieces)
3 T (or more) chilled water
*combine ingredients (except water) in a food processor until crumbly, then add water one tablespoon at a time until pastry clumps together, but isn't moist
*gather pastry and flatten into a small disk. Freeze for 20 minutes (or days or months if need be). When ready to go, make sure it is soft enough to roll but not mushy.

filling
10 C apples (peeled and thinly sliced)
1/2 C white sugar
3/4 C brown sugar
1 1/2 t cinnamon
1 1/2 t vanilla
1/4 t nutmeg
1 1/2 T lemon juice
2 T melted butter
* mix and let sit 15 minutes
add 1/4 C flour

topping
1/2 C whole wheat flour
1/2 C rolled oats
1/2 C brown sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
1/2 stick melted butter
* mix and sprinkle over the pie

*bake at 400 F, for about 90 minutes.

2. Carefully hold onto the bag of sugar as you are putting it into the cupboard. If you don't, it may come crashing down to the floor and the millions of little white granules will spray across the expanse of your kitchen. Then you have to clean it up. This is a hypothetical situation of course.....

Here We Go

Why blog? Why not. Well, it is really because my best friend recently started a blog (genuinelyjennifer.blogspot.com), so I figured why not. I used to have a blog...in 6th grade. I honestly don't know what I wrote about, because now, having a 12 year old sister, I am of the opinion that middle schoolers have very little to contribute to anything. That sounds harsh. Maybe too harsh; or maybe it is deserved because we can all remember what it was like.

Tonight was the last home football game of my high school life. That is a little overwhelming to think about. I've been immersed in the culture that is the American high school for a solid 3 years, and now, being a senior, I am experiencing my "last" of these traditions. This is going to be a good year though. I am convinced that I will have fun; no matter what is in store for the coming months. I'll relish in the traditions of Midland High, rebel against some established norms, and maybe institute some new shenanigans.

Meanwhile, I'll keep you posted on the entertainment I find in everyday high school life, the thoughts that I enjoy rambling about, and the dreams I have for the future of our generation. Let's see what happens.
