Here are a couple tips I learned today:
1. Always keep some oatmeal in your kitchen. It is cheep, quick to cook up for some warm breakfast, and is useful in quite a few bakery items.
For instance, in this pie I made up today:
Kami's Caramel Streusel Apple Pie
crust
1 1/4 C flour
1 T sugar
1/2 t salt
1 stick butter, chilled unsalted (cut into 1/2 inch pieces)
3 T (or more) chilled water
*combine ingredients (except water) in a food processor until crumbly, then add water one tablespoon at a time until pastry clumps together, but isn't moist
*gather pastry and flatten into a small disk. Freeze for 20 minutes (or days or months if need be). When ready to go, make sure it is soft enough to roll but not mushy.
filling
10 C apples (peeled and thinly sliced)
1/2 C white sugar
3/4 C brown sugar
1 1/2 t cinnamon
1 1/2 t vanilla
1/4 t nutmeg
1 1/2 T lemon juice
2 T melted butter
* mix and let sit 15 minutes
add 1/4 C flour
topping
1/2 C whole wheat flour
1/2 C rolled oats
1/2 C brown sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
1/2 stick melted butter
* mix and sprinkle over the pie
*bake at 400 F, for about 90 minutes.
2. Carefully hold onto the bag of sugar as you are putting it into the cupboard. If you don't, it may come crashing down to the floor and the millions of little white granules will spray across the expanse of your kitchen. Then you have to clean it up. This is a hypothetical situation of course.....
